Milano Serravalle Engineering directed the static and seismic intense activities of adaptation and modernisation works of the bridge over the Po River, on the A7 highway – North carriageway – under the responsibility of the concession holder, Milano Serravalle.
The structure, which was built back in the 1960s and is about 800 m long, is crucial for the mobility in the area around Pavia. In view of the specific conditions of the site in which it is built, it requires special attention.
- With respect to static intense activities of adaptation, the main interventions include:
- The removal of the post-tensioning system;
- The reinforcement of the slab through the integration of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement;
- The rehabilitation of Gerber saddles.
As far as seismic intense activities of adaptation are concerned, operations include:
- Upgrading works on abutments through the creation of a new T-shaped retaining wall;
- The replacement of structural bearing and the installation of insulating elastomeric bearings next to piers and abutments;
- The Improvement of the deck’s response to seismic events in compliance with the applicable regulations through the insertion of shock transmitters and shear keys.
Furthermore, measures were undertaken to rehabilitate the concrete covers, rebuild the parapets, replace the safety barriers, and reconstruct the waterproofing and paving. Now the construction will be equipped with innovative monitoring sensors, allowing its constant remote data to be gathered, with the aim of better defining any potential future preventive maintenance work.
